Increasing Car Safety: There’s an App for That!

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) launched an iOS app for iPhones and iPod Touches to help you and your family stay safe.  Development is underway for a version compatible with Android devices.  The NHTSA is part of the U.S. Department of Transportation.  It is responsible for reducing deaths, injuries, and economic losses resulting from motor vehicle crashes by setting and enforcing safety performance standards for motor vehicles.  Additionally, the NHTSA is one of the leading sources for automobile safety information in the U.S.

The SaferCar app provides consumers with immediate access to helpful information such as:

  • 5-Star Safety Ratings: Consumers can now look up crash test ratings and compare them across different makes and models before they purchase or lease a vehicle.
  • Recalls: The SaferCar App allows users to search recall information.  It also allows user to register their vehicle to receive notification of safety issues specific to their car.
  • Complaints: The app lets users to submit complaints to the NHTSA about possible safety problems with a vehicle.
  • Car seats: The app gives instructions on how to properly install car seats, and it shows users where to go locally to get car seat installation help.
