North Carolina Recovering From Latest Winter Storm

After snow changed to sleet Wednesday afternoon, gridlock set in across the Triangle.  Many commuters report that their drive home took several hours.  By 1:30 p.m., traffic along Western Boulevard, Lake Wheeler Road, South Sanders Street, and other major Raleigh roads came to a standstill due to slippery conditions and vehicle accidents.  Major highways, such as Interstates 40 and 540, closed at some point due to the snow storm.

According to WRAL, at least 50 wrecks were reported in Cary.  Additionally, Durham 911 operators received over 600 calls for service between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.  State Troopers reportedly responded to over 1,300 calls for service by Wednesday evening, including a fatal accident in Chatham County.  Migeul Arquimides Caseres, 45, of Siler City, was traveling south on Silk Hope Road Wednesday afternoon when he lost control of his 1996 Ford passenger vehicle, traveled left across the center and into the path of a 1999 Chevrolet, causing the death of the front passenger in the Chevrolet.  Caseres was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and exceeding a safe speed.
