Health Insurance Benefits for the Disabled

There are two types of Social Security Disability programs—Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI).  An individual qualifies for SSDI based on past work history; whereas, SSI is a needs-based program which determines eligibility based on financial assets and countable income.  In North Carolina, if you receive SSI, you are automatically covered for North Carolina Medicaid.  If you receive SSDI, you will be entitled to Medicare after a waiting period.
