Social Security Announces Plan to Expedite Veteran Disability Claims

On February 19, 2014, the Social Security Administration (SSA) unveiled a new initiative to expedite disability claims filed by veterans with a Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) disability compensation rating of 100% Permanent & Total (P&T).  Beginning March 17, 2014, SSA will treat such applications as high priority and issue expedited decisions.  The VA rating only expedites the disability claim processing and does not guarantee an approval for Social Security disability benefits.  Veterans must still meet SSA’s strict eligibility requirements to win their claims.  If the application for disability benefits is approved, the applicant will receive Medicare coverage automatically after receiving disability benefits for 24 months.

In SSA’s press release, Acting Commissioner of Social Security, Carolyn Colvin, said “our veterans have sacrificed so much for our country and it is only right that we ensure they have timely access to the disability benefits they may be eligible for and deserve.”
